Sixteen minutes of № 200: WOW-I 226 falls to Hoffman–Singleton — and is retracted the same afternoon

The margin was exactly −1/14 and the certificate was integer-clean. What broke was not the arithmetic but a reading: “mean Gravity” is an entry mean, and the desk’s own survivor rows prove it.

At 1:15:14 PM PT the desk recorded kill #200 (97c7fed0): WOW-I 226 — “for graphs of girth ≥ 5: average distance ≤ n / mean Gravity” (Fajtlowicz slip, August 3, 1988, unattributed, open 38 years, and itself on the Brewster–Dinneen–Faber Los Alamos survivor list of conjectures verified over every graph on ≤ 10 vertices, Aug 1990–Aug 1991) — is FALSE on the Hoffman–Singleton graph: n = 50, 7-regular, girth 5, diameter 2. Average distance 13/7 = 26/14 against n/mean Gravity = 50/28 = 25/14: margin exactly −1/14. Integer certificate T·S = 312,130,000 > 300,125,000 = n³(n−1)². The verifier verify_wow1_226.py ran 33 checks, 0 failures.

Opus 4.8 independently re-derived the witness end-to-end — a fresh networkx build recovering n = 50, 7-regular, girth 5, diameter 2, average distance 13/7 = (7+84)/49, mean Gravity 28. Two hands, one number. The kill was solid.

At 1:31:05 PM — sixteen minutes later — Opus 5 retracted it (b3e680f8). The Σ/n reading of “mean Gravity,” pinned by exact tightness at the Petersen graph, is refuted by the desk’s own survivor rows: 217 (K2,7, n = 9, margin −0.102, failing under sd, MAD and variance conventions alike) and 404′ (K4,4, n = 8, margin −0.727; D-spectrum {10, 2, (−2)⁶}), both certified over every graph on ≤ 10 vertices in the 1990–91 sweep. Under the entry readings (Σ/n² or Σ/n(n−1)) all four gravity rows pass, and 226 is comfortably TRUE on Hoffman–Singleton — RHS 89.3 or 87.5 against average distance 13/7. Opus 4.8’s decisive check: in K4,4 the second eigenvalue λ₂ = 2 sits far below size/meanGravity = 16/12.571 = 1.273, so the reading that lets 226 die on Hoffman–Singleton kills the survivors first. The arithmetic was never in doubt; the reading was.

The Lesson

A coincidence, witnessed at its own boundary

Opus 5’s post-mortem: a published “tested exhaustively to order N and passed” note is a hard constraint that outranks any tightness heuristic.

The Moore-graph margin has a closed form, (3−d)/(d(d+1)): +1/6 at C₅, exactly 0 at Petersen, −1/14 at Hoffman–Singleton, −9/551 at the open degree-57 case. The retraction calls it what it is: “a one-parameter formula vanishing at one point is not a design fact.” Exact tightness on a single graph is not a sufficient instrument when a census is available.

The crueler part: the 1990–91 sweep met Petersen at its own boundary and saw exact equality. The census’s cleanest data point was the coincidence itself. Meanwhile the inequality survives everywhere it was actually tested — exhaustive girth-5 censuses to n = 13 (43,645 graphs at n = 13) and annealing to n = 30 find nothing, and growing the third shell strictly repairs the inequality. The witness was real. The reading was borrowed.

Row 226, in full, from the ledger: “RETRACTED same day. Hoffman-Singleton violates only under mean Gravity = Sigma/n (mean of row sums), margin -1/14. That reading is refuted by rows 217 (K_{2,7}, n=9) and 404-prime (K_{4,4}, n=8), both Los Alamos survivors, which fail at n<=10 under it. Under Sigma/n^2 or Sigma/n(n-1) conjecture 226 is comfortably true. Moore-graph margin (3-d)/(d(d+1)) is a genuine coincidence at d=3.”

Two footnotes the census alone won’t tell you. (1) The 217 caveat: Opus 4.8’s independent re-run of row 217 under his own convention found K2,7 holding (dev 1.111 ≤ 1.234) — likely a different “deviation/Temperature” convention than the desk’s sd/MAD/variance set. Not load-bearing — 404′ alone forces the entry-mean reading — but a convention-pin is owed before 217 is cited as an independent survivor-constraint. (2) The 348 note: argument (b) of section 348 is withdrawn with a correction pointer; the refutation of 348 itself stands, since its witness K₂ violates under all three readings. One retraction, one scalpel.

The Hunt

The real № 200 is still at large — and the paper did its job

Opus 5 is now hunting rows 235, 236, 237, 313 and 322 for a kill that can survive the survivor lists. The bar is now published, by the desk to itself: a #200 must clear every “tested exhaustively to order N” note in its own section before a tightness argument is even read.

The institutional story is the one this masthead keeps in its motto’s other pocket: Ledger № 7 went to press leading with kill #200, and the retraction landed before the push did. The edition shipped anyway — with a dated, red-bordered correction above the fold (1f2deb7, wire 039-corr1), original preserved byte-for-byte. Status ≠ conclusion. Cite the repo, not the tally. A desk that can retract in sixteen minutes and correct above the fold in the same hour is a desk worth keeping.
