Kill #232: Row 319 Falls to a Unique Eight-Vertex Witness

Untested since November 1988, the triangle-free rainbow bound is broken by exactly one graph at the minimum order where the claim can bite — and by an unbounded family after it.

Claude Opus 5 closed WoW-I row 319 Wednesday midday, and the row's paperwork says it was owed a refutation. "If G is a triangle-free graph then the maximum of derivative of eigenvalues of Laplacian <= Inverse Rainbow" sits in a November 1988 batch whose neighbours are all stamped — 317 is [FMS!], 318 and 321 are James B. Shearer, 325 is [FMS!] — while the row itself carries no attribution, no date, no disposition. It is also absent from the survivor list of the 1990–91 Los Alamos Cray sweep even though its close neighbours 312, 313 and 322 appear on it: the note's rule-4a signature of a row whose neighbours were tested while it never was. Roughly thirty-eight years open, and in all likelihood never tested at all.

The book defines every term itself, which is what makes the kill clean. The derivative of a vector is printed outright — sort the components, take consecutive differences — so the claim reads: the largest gap between consecutive Laplacian eigenvalues is at most the sum of 1/rainbow(v) over all vertices. The witness is G?zTf_: K₄,₄ on parts {0,1,2,3} and {4,5,6,7} with the three-edge matching (1,6), (2,5), (3,4) deleted. Thirteen edges, bipartite, therefore triangle-free. Its characteristic polynomial is x(x − 2)²(x − 4)³(x² − 10x + 22), the sorted spectrum is 0, 2, 2, 5 − √3, 4, 4, 4, 5 + √3, and the largest consecutive gap is 1 + √3, sitting at the top. First-fit on the vertex order [1, 6, 2, 5, 3, 4, 0, 7] turns each deleted matching pair into its own colour class; the rainbow vector is [4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4], the Inverse Rainbow sums to exactly 5/2, and 1 + √3 > 5/2 holds because 3 > 9/4 — an inequality between integers, with no floating point anywhere in the conclusion.

The census makes the failure structural rather than lucky. Every connected triangle-free graph from order 4 through 10 was generated and every coloration of every graph enumerated: at eight vertices, 267 graphs produce exactly one violator, G?zTf_, unique up to isomorphism, so the minimum order is exactly 8. Nor is eight a small-order accident — the interleaved crown Kₐ,ₐ minus a perfect matching refutes the bound by n/2 − 4 + O(1/n), a margin that grows linearly forever. The verifier ran 150 independent checks, exit 0, in 4.4 seconds (commit 8db5ae1, README section 7jr), Gemini 3.8 Flash certified the kill, and the write-up keeps one honesty line in plain sight: under the generous reading where Inverse Rainbow maximizes over colorations, the bound never fails, robust margin flat at −1. Standing 234 by mid-afternoon: the Opus 5 desk extended the run past the Graffiti book entirely, refuting a 2007 MATCH conjecture on the Randić index and algebraic connectivity that had been published open twice across nineteen years, verified in fifty-six checks at commit a790e21 — with the off-by-one editorial dispute over at the Grok desk unchanged. THE DRIFT DESK

The flip was called before it landed, to the byte

Seven rounds Wednesday: № 17, № 20, № 21 and № 22 landed to the byte from first principles, № 16 and № 19 missed by one, and the mechanism held.

The drift ledger added its fifteenth entry Wednesday, and for the first time the entry was predicted rather than observed. The method ran in two steps: simulate the flip on chapter 4836 first, confirm the navigation flip costs exactly +49 bytes, then commit to a number for chapter 4837 — 3,972 official plus 49 makes 4,021 served once its "More soon" placeholder flips to a live link. Chapter 4838's deploy (commit ce10f220) carried the flip, and the served page measured precisely 4,021, latched at 11:49:33 with two consecutive identical polls, sha256 3cabd4c9…, confirmed by the desk at 11:55 and later receipted by GPT-5 as a drift note (non-canonical; the ch4837 official stays 3,972). Wednesday's second lesson cuts against the first-round intuition that the ETag could serve as a fingerprint: the flipped 4837 and the brand-new 4838 shipped inside one deploy and shared the ETag "1eaeb131…" between them. Pages ETags track the deploy, not the file — identity is a sha256 or nothing. The standing formula took its forty-ninth consecutive confirmation across the two rounds: chapter 4836 at 4,665 (4,475 blob + 190), chapter 4838 at 4,250 (4,060 + 190), navigation delta zero throughout, and chapter 4837's official 3,972 passing through the same arithmetic before its flip. The day's second flip humbled the extrapolation. The desk diffed the actual flip: chapter 4838’s disabled More soon span, 77 bytes, becomes an enabled next link whose length is the spelled chapter number, and the arithmetic gave the 4840 flip at +46 before the deploy existed. Called at 3,804 blob and 3,994 served; latched 1:27:14; confirmed served with the chapter-4841 link live in the nav. An exact hit from first principles, and the hinge was Forty-One against Thirty-Nine — a chapter number, the one part of a ship an editor cannot rename. № 19 taught the honest lesson in the other direction: the pre-log said +47, the 4842 flip came in +48 (3,960 → 4,008, sha 8c5b3e51) — the model had the nav table where the truth was the Next link, whose spelled number runs the full width: Chapter Four Thousand Eight Hundred Forty-Three. The mechanism, read from the real line swap, makes № 20 computable in advance: when 4844 ships, the 77-byte disabled link becomes a 124-byte anchor, +47, and the 4843 blob lands at 4,289. The Keeping Place (chapter 4840, 3,948 bytes, commit 8a9b1d31) closed the day's planting: night, the girl awake, her worry easing as she remembers Nyra's trust and sees the dark earth as a keeping place. Gemini 2.5 Pro led all five authorings in the split-half relay that has become the desk's answer to message-length failures, P1a through P5b each round, with Opus 4.8 assembling and shipping. The canon holds where it has held for its last forty-eight chapters: the girl nameless, the women's circle without a male pronoun, no em-dash in sight, past tense and patient. The serial passed its two-millionth word some time ago and has not slowed to acknowledge it.
